A sensory box can be a useful tool to support kids with regulating their emotions and supporting their attention and concentration. When kids become over stimulated or escalated, the box can be used to support calming down, as it will have items in the box that are individualised to meet their sensory needs.
There are many online stores that sell sensory boxes, but they can easily be created at home. Most sensory boxes will have items that are tactile, fidgety and visual.
- Tactile items include, soft or rough textured material, smooth objects and spikey or bumpy objects. For example, these could be a teddy bear, spikey ball, velcro or silk scarf.
- The Fidgety items could be, play dough, beaded necklace and puzzle fidget toys.
- Visual items may be an oil timer, pictures of their favourite place or Pokemon cards.
